Volunteer for a church renovation in Seattle, WA

Illume is a young mission church in Seattle, WA that began in 2019 to carry on the legacy of two recently closed WELS congregations in the north part of the city. The congregation recently acquired a century-old Methodist church near the University of Washington, a space brimming with potential for community engagement and spiritual enrichment. But to fully realize their mission and renovations, they need your help to cross the finish line!

Location: Seattle, Washington

Dates:  April 5 - May 24 and July 1 - August 31 (Sunday and Monday off days)

Number of volunteers needed: 20-30 volunteers

Project Manager:  Ben Dose

There are private bedrooms available on-site that include 2 queen beds and 5 twin beds. This house has a brand new shower and all towels and bedding will be provided. 4-6 volunteers can be hosted by Illume members. The parking lot also has space for 2 RVs. There is a potential rental house available as well.

Two meals will be provided each day. Volunteers are responsible for their third meal and food on non-working days. Anyone not involved with the day-to-day building process is encouraged to assist the congregation with the meals and other duties as needed.

Additional Information

The flight and gas costs are covered if you stay one week or more. Rides to and from the airport are provided for all volunteers.

The congregation wants to help you make the most of your days off and has offered a variety of suggestions for nearby sites and attractions. The church itself is located in a safe, quiet neighborhood and is a reasonable drive away from some of the beauty of God's creation, like Mt. Rainier,  North Cascades National Park, and Puget Sound. With Seattle's mild, flower-filled springtime and near-ideal summer weather, it's a great opportunity to help your brothers and sisters in Christ and explore a wonderful part of the US.

Do I need to have previous experience to apply?

Each phase of the project requires different skills and numbers of volunteers, so if you’ve never lifted a hammer, you can still volunteer! Our experienced volunteers happily provide on-the-job training to those who need it.

What should I bring?

While bringing your own tools and safety equipment is encouraged, it is not a requirement. We understand not everyone can access the necessary tools or safety equipment. If you have your own items, feel free to bring them. This would include safety glasses, a hard hat, appropriate shoes, hammer, tool belt, 1″x25′ tape measure, speed square, utility knife with blades, bird’s foot/cat’s paw, pencil(s), and chalk line. If you’re traveling by plane and find it difficult to pack these items or don’t have them, we have them covered.

Are there age restrictions?

Anyone 16 years of age or older may serve on a Builders For Christ project. Volunteers under the age of 18 must have an adult chaperone who will volunteer as their supervisor. Only volunteers age 18 and older are permitted to operate motor vehicles and power tools, climb ladders and scaffolding, work on a roof, or engage in any other hazardous activities.
