Ministry to People with Disabilities - Occupational Therapist

As a Kingdom Workers' visiting volunteer, you will use your occupational therapy expertise to help children with developmental, physical, and sensory disabilities improve their skills and achieve independence in daily life activities. You will also spend time teaching basic therapy techniques to local Kingdom Workers staff, other volunteers, and caregivers.

Location: Lilongwe and Blantyre, Malawi

Dates: August 8-13, 2023

Number of volunteers needed: 1-2

Anticipated Activities

  • Assessing children's functional abilities and designing individualized treatment plans to address their specific needs and goals
  • Conducting therapy sessions to help children develop fine motor, gross motor, cognitive, sensory, and social-emotional skills
  • Collaborating with parents, caregivers, Kingdom Workers staff, and volunteers to ensure care and optimal outcomes for children
  • Educating parents and caregivers on strategies to support their child's development and progress outside of therapy sessions
  • Advocating for the needs and rights of children with disabilities and promoting inclusivity and accessibility in all settings
  • Providing training to other volunteers and Kingdom Workers staff

Preferred Qualifications

We are looking for an Occupational Therapist with:

  • Experience working with children
  • Experience designing therapy plans and sharing plans with caregivers
  • Cross-cultural experience.
  • Experience teaching the basics of therapy to a small group

Support Raising

Volunteers are encouraged to support raise to cover travel costs. We will provide you with resources and support throughout your support-raising efforts. You can read more about support raising here.

The estimated cost of travel is broken down below, which includes lodging, food, in-country transportation, a volunteer fee, and a visa. Visiting volunteers are also responsible for purchasing their own airfare. Note that it is not included in the estimated costs since ticket prices fluctuate.

Estimated Costs

    • Visa: $50
    • Lodging: $75 per night
    • Meals: $15 per day
    • Volunteer fee: $200

Safety Concerns

Kingdom Workers-Malawi takes every precaution to ensure the safety of volunteers. Malawi is a stable country, and volunteer accommodations are equipped with night guards, an alarm system, and secure locks. Nevertheless, foreigners can be targets for petty theft. As part of orientation, you will be taught how to safeguard valuables.

Health and Immunizations

Our Mission Services team will work with you to make sure you receive the necessary vaccinations. There are several hospitals in Blantyre, but some of the sites you will be visiting are remote.
