Before the First Bell Rings: 7 Prayers for the New School Year

The first day of school brings a familiar mix of excitement and uncertainty.

There are backpacks to pack, classrooms to prepare, schedules to learn and new faces to meet. For some families, the year begins in a Lutheran school. For others, it's a public or private school, a homeschool classroom, a technical college or a university campus.

Wherever learning happens, God's people have an opportunity to pray.

We understand that God works through the vocations he gives us. He uses parents to care for their children, teachers to help educate them, mentors to guide them and countless others to serve their neighbors.

The work may look ordinary. But God's work often does.

So before the first bell rings, here are seven prayers for the people entering a new school year.

1. Pray for parents and homeschool families

Parents have the privilege and responsibility of teaching their children—not only their ABCs and multiplication tables, but also God's Word.

Pray for parents as they balance work, school, activities, and family life. Pray for patience when the math lesson doesn't go as planned. Pray for wisdom when children face difficult situations. And pray that the truth they teach their children would take root in their hearts.

For families who homeschool, pray for perseverance, creativity and joy in the daily work of learning together.

And for all parents, pray that they remember they don't have to carry the responsibility alone. God has placed other people around their families to encourage and support them.

Lord, give parents wisdom and patience as they teach their children. Remind them that their work is a holy calling and that you are with them in the ordinary moments of every day.

2. Pray for teachers and educators

Teachers have an enormous influence on the lives of their students.

Pray for Lutheran school teachers as they have the unique privilege of teaching God's Word alongside every other subject.

Pray for public and private school teachers, special education teachers, aides, coaches and administrators as they serve children from many different backgrounds.

Pray for patience when classrooms are difficult. Pray for wisdom when a student is struggling. And pray for opportunities for teachers to show kindness and compassion to the children entrusted to them.

Lord, strengthen teachers for the work ahead. Give them patience, wisdom and joy, and bless them in the many ways they serve their students.

3. Pray for children with disabilities

For some children, starting a new school year comes with challenges others may not see.

A child may struggle to communicate, learn, or participate in activities. A family may spend hours navigating therapies, appointments, and educational plans. Teachers and caregivers may need to find new ways to help a child participate and thrive.

Pray that children with disabilities are seen not simply for the challenges they face, but as children of God—created in his image and gifted in their own unique ways.

This is part of why Kingdom Workers serves through Disability Care. Around the world, children with disabilities can be overlooked, isolated or even hidden from their communities. Through local Christian partners, volunteers have opportunities to bring practical care, friendship, and the message of God's love to children and families.

Lord, help us see every child as you see them. Give families strength, communities compassion, and children opportunities to use the gifts you have given them.

4. Pray for children in foster care and the families who welcome them

A new school year can be especially complicated for a child in foster care.

There may be a new classroom, a new teacher, new classmates—and perhaps a new home, too.

Pray for children who are carrying experiences and questions that their classmates may never know about.

Pray for foster parents as they welcome children into their homes and navigate the challenges that come with caring for children who have experienced disruption and loss.

And pray for biological families who are working toward reunification.

Through Foster Family Support, Kingdom Workers seeks to strengthen families and equip Christians to care for children who need stability, love and support.

Lord, surround children in foster care with people who will protect, encourage and love them. Give foster families patience and strength, and bless every effort to bring healing and stability to families.

5. Pray for teenagers discovering their gifts

The teenage years are full of questions:

What am I good at? What do I want to do? Where is my life headed?

Not every young person will follow the same path—and they don't have to.

God gives each person different abilities and opportunities to serve others. For some, that calling may involve a university degree. For others, it may be a skilled trade. For still others, it may take a direction they haven't even imagined yet.

Through Build Up, Kingdom Workers connects teens with mentors who help them develop practical skills in the trades while building relationships with caring Christian adults.

Pray for young people as they discover their gifts. Pray for mentors who will encourage them. And pray that every teenager learns that their worth isn't determined by a career, a paycheck or academic achievement.

Lord, help young people recognize the gifts you have given them. Surround them with mentors who encourage them and guide them toward opportunities to serve their neighbors.

6. Pray for college students and young adults

For many young adults, this fall marks a major transition.

Some are leaving home for the first time. Others are returning to campus. Some are attending a Lutheran college. Others are heading to a public university, technical college or another school.

They will encounter new ideas, new responsibilities, and new freedoms.

Pray that they remain rooted in God's Word.

Pray for Christian friends who will encourage them rather than pull them away from their faith. Pray for pastors, campus ministries, professors, and mentors who will point them back to Christ. Pray for wisdom as they make decisions about relationships, careers, and the future.

And pray that young adults recognize that this season of life isn't simply preparation for their "real" life someday. God has given them a vocation right now. They have neighbors to serve, people to encourage and opportunities to reflect Christ wherever he has placed them.

Lord, keep young adults close to you. Give them courage to stand firm in your Word and wisdom to use their freedom and gifts in ways that serve others.

7. Pray for every child and young person

Above all, pray that every child and young person knows where their identity is found.

Not in grades.

Not in athletic ability.

Not in popularity.

Not in a future career.

Not in what the world says they should become.

Their identity is found in Christ.

They are children of God, redeemed by Jesus and loved by their Savior.

Whether they are sitting in a kindergarten classroom, learning at the kitchen table, practicing a trade or walking across a college campus, they have opportunities to grow in their gifts and serve the people God places around them.

Lord Jesus, keep the children and young people in our families and communities close to you. Give them faithful teachers, parents, mentors, and friends. Help them grow in your Word and use the gifts you have given them to serve others.
