Builders for Christ Transforms Seattle Church
Not Your Typical Gathering Space...
In Seattle, Washington, Illume Church set out to create something different—a space where faith and community could grow side by side. With help from Builders for Christ volunteers, they built more than walls. They built relationships, trust, and a welcoming place for people who might never step inside a traditional church.
“Seattle isn’t a place where door-to-door invitations work,” said Pastor Kent Reeder. “But people here long for community and safe, thoughtful spaces. That’s what we wanted to create.”

A Space That Invites, Not Pressures.
“This building is a tool, but not a typical one,” Kent explained. “We wanted something that could adapt to the rhythms of our neighborhood—a place where people could linger, connect, and explore faith at their own pace.”
The space Illume envisioned—and Builders for Christ helped bring to life—reflects that culture. Instead of pews and stained glass, the building features a flexible, modern design that invites curiosity rather than prescribes religion. It feels more like a coffee shop-meets-community center than a conventional sanctuary. And that was intentional.
From Construction to Connection
The impact came quickly.
Jen, a local woman facing hard times, first visited Illume through a member’s invitation. She soon began volunteering—so much so that one Sunday she called Pastor Kent to ask why church hadn’t started yet, then spent the whole day waiting because she felt so at home.
Another dad, after attending a community event with food trucks, live music, and group discussions, told Kent’s wife: “That is a palatable way to explore Christianity.” For Seattle’s highly secular culture, Kent said, it was the highest praise he could imagine.
Building More Than Walls
Illume’s gatherings now look more like conversations around tables than sermons from a pulpit. As Pastor Kent put it, “The throughput of Christianity should be safe, vulnerable, unconditionally loving community.” Thanks to Builders for Christ, Illume now has a space that embodies that mission—a place where neighbors feel welcome, faith grows naturally, and lives are transformed.
