Supporting Families with Disabilities in Grenada

Raising a child with disabilities brings unique challenges—and unique joys. For Veronica Map Alexander, mother of two sons diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Kingdom Workers in Grenada has been a source of strength, hope, and community.

Her older son, Luther, remains active in Kingdom Workers programs. Her younger son, David, passed away at age twenty-four but left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

A Safe Place to Belong

For families like Veronica’s, finding spaces where children feel safe and welcome is not easy. Many churches in Grenada are not equipped to support individuals with sensory challenges or special needs.

“We as parents of children with special needs deal with life in a more intense way. You have to give great consideration to what limitations your child might have, where you’re sending them, and all the dynamics that go with that. It takes a lot from you emotionally. We all just really need the help that Christ offers to cope with those situations.”

– Veronica Map Alexander

“Some of the children face sensory overload when they attend regular church services. But at our activities, they can learn about Jesus in a setting designed for them. They can have fun, hear the gospel, and share what they’ve learned with their families.”

– Keisha Franklyn, Kingdom Workers Grenada Program Coordinator

Veronica agreed: “Coming to an activity at Grace Lutheran Church felt like a safe alternative—a place where my children could relax and enjoy themselves.”

Building Community and Faith

“Once you're a parent, you need support. But if you're a parent with special needs children, that support mechanism connection becomes even more necessary as far as I'm concerned.” – Veronica Map Alexander

Kingdom Workers offers more than programs for children and adults with disabilities—it creates a community for parents, too. Through Parent Support Groups and special events, parents find encouragement, share experiences, and lift one another up in faith. After David’s passing, other parents came alongside Veronica to grieve, pray, and support one another.

“We let them know that despite the challenges they’re facing, there are people here who care deeply for them and are willing to support and fellowship with them.”

– Keisha Franklyn

Sharing Christ’s Love with Everyone

For volunteers like Kimisha Antoine, the most meaningful part of Kingdom Workers’ disability ministry is pointing families to the hope found in Jesus. They emphasize that every individual is created with purpose and deserves the chance to hear the gospel because Jesus came for all.

The ministry’s goal is to ensure that no one is left behind and that every family has the opportunity to experience Christ’s love in a supportive, welcoming environment.
