5 Ways Hygiene Opened Doors to the Gospel
In Nto Obo, Nigeria, simple hygiene lessons laid the foundation for a church planting movement. By teaching disease prevention and providing soap and mosquito nets, Kingdom Workers volunteers improved health while opening doors for gospel outreach and lasting community change. Just months later, in July, the people of Nto Obo gathered in celebration as their new congregation was officially established. What started with hygiene education and basic health tools grew into a spiritual home where God’s Word will be shared for generations to come.
1. By Building Trust with Village Leaders
In rural Nigeria, visitors must first seek the blessing of the village chief before beginning any work. For Kingdom Workers volunteers, this tradition became a valuable opportunity to build relationships. Through hygiene education—teaching handwashing, sanitation, and malaria prevention—volunteers showed respect for the community and earned the chief’s trust, laying the groundwork for future ministry.
2. By Meeting Physical Needs First
Partnering with Christ the King Church, volunteers distributed soap and mosquito nets and taught families how to prevent common illnesses. These simple tools brought real health benefits to the community. But they also did something more—they showed Christ-like love in action, proving that the message of Jesus comes with both care for the body and hope for the soul.
3. By Sparking a Desire for Worship
Hygiene lessons had not only improved health—they had sparked a spiritual hunger for God’s Word. After hearing about disease prevention and the Savior who heals hearts, the people of Nto Obo made a heartfelt request:
“Come back. Not just to teach, but to worship with us. We want a church here.”
4. By Creating a Place for Community and Faith
When Kingdom Workers leader Daniel Ukoh returned to the chief—this time to ask about planting a Christian congregation—the chief agreed. In July, men, women, and children gathered to celebrate the birth of a new church in Nto Obo. What began with soap and mosquito nets became a spiritual home where people now gather weekly to worship God.
5. By Inspiring Support to Reach More Villages
Every bar of soap, every mosquito net, every hygiene lesson creates opportunities to share the gospel. Because of supporters like you, Nto Obo now has a church where people hear about Jesus close to home.
