Goats and the Gospel

In a small, rural village in Zambia, Maxwell’s life has been shaped by both hardship and resilience. Born with a disability that makes walking and physical labor difficult, he has faced challenges that most of us can only imagine.

Maxwell’s wife left him because of his disability. His children moved far away. Alone in a roofless, dirt-floor home, he has known loneliness in a culture where family and community are central to daily life. But something incredible is happening in Maxwell’s village—something that is restoring his sense of dignity, purpose, and belonging.

Finding Community and Purpose Through Goats

Maxwell isn’t a member of the local Lutheran church, but through Kingdom Workers’ disability support groups, he is hearing the gospel and experiencing the love of Christ in profound ways. These groups meet regularly for fellowship, devotion, and community projects, creating spaces where people with disabilities can feel valued and supported.

One of the most impactful projects? Goats.

Together, members of the support group have built a goat pen, purchased goats, and are using them to generate sustainable income for their families. For Maxwell, this has been life-changing.

Why Goats?

Goats are an ideal source of income for people with disabilities because:

  • They require minimal physical labor – Unlike farming crops, goats don’t need heavy lifting or extensive manual work.
  • They provide multiple income streams – Goat milk, meat, and offspring can be sold to provide financial stability.
  • They thrive in rural environments – Hardy and low-maintenance, goats can be raised even in challenging conditions.

Through his involvement in caring for the goats, Maxwell has found renewed purpose. He no longer feels like a burden but a contributing member of his community. The income he earns helps him meet his basic needs, while the friendships he’s formed provide much-needed emotional and spiritual support.

More Than Livelihood: A Path to Faith

While the economic impact of the goat program is significant, the most transformative change happening in Maxwell’s life is spiritual. At every support group meeting, members share devotions and discuss God’s Word. Through these gatherings, Maxwell is not just receiving financial stability—he is encountering the gospel message in a personal and meaningful way.

For the first time in years, Maxwell feels a sense of belonging. He is surrounded by people who care for him, reflect Christ’s love, and remind him that he is not forgotten.

Expanding Hope to More Communities

Maxwell’s story is just one example of how simple acts of service—paired with the gospel—can change lives. Across Zambia, disability support groups are bringing people together, providing sustainable solutions, and most importantly, sharing the hope of Jesus Christ.

There are many more people like Maxwell, waiting to hear and experience the love of Christ in tangible ways. The mission of Kingdom Workers is to continue expanding programs like this so that no one is left behind.
