One Man’s Prayer is Changing an Entire Village

In a small village in Indonesia, the prayers of one man are beginning to bloom into a living testimony of faith, hope, and generational transformation.

Several years ago, Pak Gusti lived a life far from Christ. Known for his heavy drinking and harsh words, few could have predicted the transformation that was about to take place.

When a local pastor from the Gereja Lutheran Indonesia Synod (GLI) began teaching Bible classes at his daughter’s house in the rural village of Kot’Olin, Pak Gusti, sick in the next room, overheard the lessons. As he listened, the Holy Spirit worked in his heart.

Drawn by the promise of a new life in Christ, Pak Gusti made a commitment to attend worship services every Sunday—even though the church was several miles away. Too old to walk the distance, he would hire a motorcycle each week to ensure he could participate.

The transformation in Pak Gusti’s life was profound. He became a source of encouragement in his village, always supporting Kingdom Workers’ Clean Water projects and sharing his newfound faith through his actions and words. His life was a testimony to his community, demonstrating the hope that Christ brings.

During the pandemic, Coral CadyMetcalfe, Kingdom Workers Field Lead, received sad news—Pak Gusti had fallen ill again. Before she could reach him, he was called home to his Heavenly Father. Though heartbroken, those who knew him held onto the promise of reunion in heaven.

Before he passed, Pak Gusti had one fervant prayer: that his village would one day have access to clean water. Today, Kingdom Workers staff are visiting his village, where the first steps are being taken to bring sustainable water solutions to the community. His dream, born of faith and love, is being realized.

Even more beautifully, Pak Gusti once expressed a desire to see a GLI church established in his own village, so others wouldn’t have to travel so far to hear about Jesus. Though he didn’t live to see that dream fulfilled, the seeds he planted through his journey of faith are growing. His family and neighbors warmly welcomed the recent visits from Kingdom Workers, eagerly opening their hearts to hear more about Jesus Christ.

Pak Gusti’s story reminds us that God’s work often continues long after we are gone. Through acts of faithfulness, through prayer, and through a heart transformed by Christ, one man’s legacy is leading a whole village toward new life.
